Mrs. Nielson is fondly remembered by all her fifth grade students at Old Bonhomme. Along with her son and our classmate Bill Nielson, she joined our email group when it first began in 2003 and we will dearly miss knowing she is there...still looking over us.

"Nielson, Mayestelle Bell "May"~passed away peacefully January 19, 2007, in Clermont, Florida. She was 87. Wife of well known Ladue Schools Athletic Director, Steve Nielson. She and her late husband Steve, moved to Clermont in the late 1970s after her retirement from a teaching career with the Ladue School System that spanned over 30 years. Her many students benefited from her enthusiasm and excellent teaching and will remember her well. She was born and grew up in Congress Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in education and later received a Masters Degree in Education from Washington University in St. Louis. A long time member of the Tri-Delta Sorority, she remained active in sorority affairs throughout her life. During World War II, she supported the war effort, caring for traveling servicemen as a stewardess for the Baltimore Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Following the war, she began her teaching career in St. Louis. In retirement, she remained active in many organizations in Clermont including the local garden club, DAR and in volunteer work with the Duvall Home in Deland Florida for handicapped children. She leaves many good friends and neighbors from both St. Louis and Clermont. She is survived by her three sons, Steve W. Nielson of Alexandria Virginia, William Nielson of Orlando Florida and James Nielson of Athens Georgia, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.Services: Funeral services were held in Clermont on January 23, 2007.
